After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, many houses partially destroyed during the Second World War were left in central Berlin. They were in the district of Mitte, which was part of East Berlin. These places left in the city center drew many artists and they became the breeding ground for all sorts of cultures and underground against other cultures. It is home to many clubs including “treasure”, one of the world’s largest techno clubs.
This cultural development included the occupation of buildings abandoned by alternative artists. Berlin has a rich cultural life which is very diverse. Performances and events of all kinds are numerous. It is an international city, very open and tolerant of many cultures. Although there are many perceptions of the German underground culture which are predominantly portrayed in Hollywood movies as Goth and Neo-Nazi influenced, Germany also has a very popular night scene for parties, raves and clubs.
Although the population is declining and that the unemployment rate is high, many young Germans and artists continue to settle in Berlin, making the city the capital of youth and pop culture in Germany. Moreover, in 2003, it was announced that the annual Popkomm, a world convention for the music industry, would now take place in Berlin, after being held for 15 years in Cologne. In addition, the music channel MTV Germany has also moved its headquarters from Munich to Berlin in late April 2004. Berlin is also a hub for cinema which annually hosts the Berlinale International Film Festival.
